The OSG 1635005087 is a thread forming tap designed for M5x0.80 Metric Coarse threading applications, manufactured from cobalt and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating. Thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chip generation — a key advantage in blind-hole work and in materials prone to chip packing. This tap carries a 6H class of fit and a D7 thread limit, providing tight dimensional control suited to precision fastener applications. It is installed using a tapping driver, CNC machining center, or drill press by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance mechanics.
This tap is engineered for use in both blind-hole and through-hole threading operations across a wide range of materials. Its modified bottoming chamfer — with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads — allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. The OSG EXOPRO XPF series is built for demanding applications in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, hardened steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. It fits standard tapping chucks and holders sized for the 4.93 mm shank diameter.
Designed for M5x0.80 Metric Coarse thread forming in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, hardened steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium workpieces in both blind-hole and through-hole configurations. Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF Series 16350.
Thread forming taps require a lubricated, properly sized forming hole — not the same pilot diameter used for cut taps — so verify the correct forming drill size for M5x0.80 before drilling. Secure the workpiece and power down spindle before changing tooling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material, particularly when working stainless steel or high-nickel alloys. Follow shop safety standards and applicable machining codes when operating CNC or manual tapping equipment.
