The OSG 1635003353 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without chip generation, reducing the risk of chip packing in blind holes. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating, this tap handles demanding materials including stainless steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. It produces M3x0.35 Metric Fine threads to a 4H class of fit with a D3 thread limit. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2.2047 inches (56 mm) and thread length is 0.2362 inches (6 mm). Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF Series 16350.
This tap is suited for production and job-shop environments where M3x0.35 fine-pitch threads are required in blind or through-hole applications. It is commonly used in precision machining of aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium components. The cold-forming process work-hardens the thread flanks, producing stronger threads compared to cut tapping, making it a common choice for aerospace, automotive, and medical part applications where thread integrity matters.
Designed for use in blind-hole and through-hole threading applications across aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium workpieces requiring M3x0.35 Metric Fine threads to a 4H class of fit.
Thread forming taps require proper cutting fluid or tapping compound matched to the workpiece material — forming taps displace metal rather than cut it, so lubrication is critical to torque control and tap life. Always verify spindle speed and torque settings on the tapping machine or CNC prior to use; forming taps require higher torque than cut taps of the same size. Ensure the tap holder provides adequate float to compensate for lead-angle variations. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if thread form quality degrades.
