The OSG 1635003053 is a thread forming tap designed for M3x0.50 metric coarse threading in blind and through-hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap features a cobalt substrate with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating, offering high heat resistance and extended tool life in demanding materials. The modified bottoming chamfer — approximately 2.5 to 3 threads — allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. With an overall length of 56 millimeters and a thread length of 6 millimeters, it fits standard tap holders and collet chucks used by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians.
The OSG 1635003053 is suited for production and job-shop environments where threading into aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium is required. The 4H class of fit delivers a standard tolerance thread suitable for general-purpose metric fastener engagement. Thread direction is right hand. The tap belongs to OSG Series 16350, marketed under the EXOPRO XPF trade name, and is sold individually.

Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — consult OSG or standard metric forming tap drill charts for the correct pre-drill diameter for M3x0.50, as it differs from cutting tap drill sizes. Adequate lubrication or cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material must be applied before tapping to prevent galling, especially in stainless steel and titanium. Secure the tap in a rigid holder or CNC tap cycle to maintain axial alignment and avoid tap breakage in small-diameter applications. Power down and secure any machine spindle before changing or inspecting tooling.
