The OSG 1626001208 is a cobalt thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Unlike cut taps, thread forming taps displace material to create strong, work-hardened threads. This tap features a modified bottoming chamfer, making it suitable for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. With an overall length of 3.257 inches and a thread length of 0.454 inches, it fits standard tapping setups used by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working in metal fabrication and production environments.
This tap is built for demanding material applications across a wide range of metals. It is suited for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, hardened steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. The cobalt construction provides heat resistance and durability when tapping tough or abrasive materials. It is commonly used in job shop, production machining, and MRO applications where thread quality and tool life are priorities.
Designed for use with standard tap holders, tapping heads, and CNC machine tool setups accepting a 0.220-inch shank diameter. Suitable for thread forming in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, hardened steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium workpieces.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill - consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct hole diameter before use, as forming taps use different pilot hole sizes than cut taps. Apply cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce friction and tool wear. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface. Installation and tooling setup should be performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians.
