The OSG 1625038247 is a thread forming tap designed for producing 3/8-24 UNF internal threads in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger threads with no chip generation. This tap carries a 2B class of fit and an H7 thread limit, making it suitable for precision threading applications. It is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating to extend tool life in abrasive and high-temperature cutting environments. The modified bottoming chamfer, with 2.5 to 3 threads of lead, allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Licensed machinists and tooling technicians working in production and job shop environments are the primary users.
This tap is rated for use in blind hole and through-hole threading applications across a broad spectrum of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. The TiCN coating provides added wear resistance when working with harder steels and high-nickel alloys. It is part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF series, a line engineered for demanding thread forming in both low- and high-volume production runs. This tap is suited to CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where controlled feed rates and proper lubrication can be maintained.
Rated for threading in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium workpieces. Suitable for blind hole and through-hole threading operations.
Thread forming taps require the correct pre-drill hole diameter — use the recommended forming tap drill size for 3/8-24 UNF, as standard tap drill charts do not apply to forming taps. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material before threading. Ensure the tapping machine or CNC spindle is synchronized to the correct feed rate to prevent tap breakage. Secure the workpiece fully before operation and confirm spindle speed falls within the recommended range for the material being tapped.
