The OSG 1625038117 is a thread forming tap in the EXOPRO XPF Series 16250, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. The tap produces a 3/8-16 UNC thread to a 2B class of fit with an H7 thread limit, using a bottoming chamfer of 1.5 to 2 threads for threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Constructed from cobalt high speed steel with a V-coating finish, it delivers extended tool life when working in abrasive or tough materials. Overall length is 3.937 inches (100 mm) with a tapping depth of 1.575 inches (40 mm). Right-hand thread direction. Installed by machinists and toolroom mechanics in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is engineered for blind hole threading applications across a wide range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. The bottoming chamfer style makes it the correct choice when thread depth must extend as close as possible to the base of a drilled blind hole. It is well-suited for CNC machining centers, manual tapping machines, and rigid tapping operations where precise thread formation is required without chip generation.
Suitable for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, hardened steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium workpieces requiring 3/8-16 UNC blind hole threads.
Thread forming taps require a larger pilot hole diameter than cutting taps — consult the OSG EXOPRO XPF recommended forming drill chart before drilling. Always power down or de-energize the machine and secure the workpiece before tool changes. Use a cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel or titanium. Verify spindle speed and feed rate are set to the tap manufacturer's recommendations before beginning the tapping cycle.
