The OSG 1625014246 is a thread forming tap designed for through-hole threading in a wide range of metallic materials. Built from cobalt high speed steel with a V-coating finish, it produces internal threads by displacing material rather than cutting, resulting in stronger threads and no chips to clear. The tap is configured in a plug chamfer style with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads, a 1/4-20 UNC thread form, and a 2B class of fit with an H6 thread limit. Overall length is 3.1496 inches with a thread length of 0.4961 inches and a tapping depth of 1.378 inches. It is sized for machinists, tool-and-die shops, and maintenance technicians working in production or MRO environments.
This tap is applied in through-hole threading operations across a broad spectrum of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. The cobalt construction and V-coating make it well suited for demanding applications where standard high speed steel taps may wear prematurely. It fits standard tap holders and machine tapping setups and carries the OSG EXOPRO XPF trade name under Series 16250.
Designed as a thread forming tap for 1/4-20 UNC through-hole applications across material application codes P, M, N, and H, covering steels, stainless, non-ferrous metals, and high-temperature alloys. Fits standard 0.255-inch shank tap holders and collet-style tapping heads.
Thread forming taps should be installed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians familiar with proper tap speed and feed rates for the target material. Power down and lock out any machine tool before changing tooling. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material to reduce friction and extend tap life. Do not force the tap if resistance increases unexpectedly, as thread forming taps are susceptible to breakage if the pilot hole diameter is undersized.
