The OSG 1625012287 is a thread forming tap designed for producing 12-28 UNF internal threads without cutting chips, using a cold-forming process that displaces material rather than removing it. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a TiCN coating, this tap delivers enhanced hardness and heat resistance for demanding threading applications. It features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. With an overall length of 3.15 inches (80 mm) and a thread length of 0.52 inches, it fits standard tapping chucks and tap holders used in machining and maintenance work. The H7 thread limit ensures consistent fit within the 2B class of fit tolerance range. This is an OSG EXOPRO XPF series tap.
This tap is suited for both blind hole and through-hole threading in a wide range of materials. It is rated for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. It is commonly used in machine shops, manufacturing facilities, and maintenance environments where precise, burr-free threads are required in ductile metals. Right-hand thread direction is standard. The tap reaches a maximum tapping depth of 1.12 inches, making it appropriate for moderate-depth blind hole work.
Designed for use in right-hand 12-28 UNF tapping applications across a broad range of ductile and ferrous workpiece materials, including aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. Suitable for use with standard tap holders and tapping chucks that accept a 0.22-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication or cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material — consult the fluid manufacturer for material-specific recommendations. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle is properly aligned before tapping to avoid tap breakage or thread distortion. Use the correct drill size for the thread form specified by UNF thread-forming drill charts, as forming taps require a larger pilot hole than cutting taps. This tap should be installed and operated by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with tapping operations and toolholder requirements.
