The OSG 1625012208 is a thread forming tap designed for 1/2-20 UNF internal threading in a wide range of metals. Part of the EXOPRO XPF Series 16250, it uses a modified bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads, making it suitable for both blind hole and through-hole applications where thread depth control is critical. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and carries a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating, designated finish code V, which improves wear resistance and surface hardness. Overall length is 3.937 inches (100 mm), with a thread length of 0.767 inches and a tapping depth of 1.929 inches. Class of fit is 2B with an H8 thread limit. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers of this tap.
This tap is rated for a broad material application range including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. Material application codes P, M, N, and H confirm its suitability across ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces. It is well suited for production machining environments, job shops, and maintenance toolrooms where a single tap must perform across multiple material types. The modified bottoming geometry allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes without requiring a separate bottoming tap in many setups.

Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill size — consult the appropriate forming tap drill chart before drilling. Use a compatible tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless steel, titanium, or high-nickel alloys. Secure the tap in a rigid tapping holder or CNC tapping chuck with appropriate torque control to avoid tap breakage in harder materials. Ensure the workpiece is fixtured securely and the machine spindle is properly aligned before beginning the tapping cycle.
