The OSG 1625012205 is a thread forming tap designed for producing 1/2-20 UNF internal threads without cutting, instead displacing material to create a stronger thread form. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, this tap delivers extended tool life in demanding materials. It features a Modified Bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads, making it suitable for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. With an overall length of 3.937 inches (100 mm) and a thread limit of H5, the 1625012205 is part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF series. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians install this tap in CNC machining centers or manual tapping setups.
This tap is rated for use in a wide range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. It supports both blind hole and through-hole threading applications. The 3B class of fit and right-hand thread direction make it a standard choice for precision threading work in aerospace, automotive, and industrial maintenance environments where thread strength and dimensional accuracy are critical.
Designed for 1/2-20 UNF blind hole and through-hole threading applications across material application codes P, M, N, and H, covering carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, titanium, and aluminum alloys.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician using a properly calibrated tapping chuck or CNC rigid tapping cycle. Since this is a thread forming tap, the correct tap drill size for the material and desired thread engagement percentage must be used — consult a thread forming tap drill chart before drilling the pilot hole. Do not use cutting-style tap lubricants designed for chip evacuation; use a forming-specific tapping fluid appropriate for the workpiece material. Verify spindle alignment before tapping to prevent tap breakage.
