The OSG 1625010246 is a thread forming tap designed to produce 10-24 UNC internal threads without cutting chips, making it well suited for blind hole and through-hole threading applications. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating designated as a V-coat, this tap delivers extended tool life in demanding materials. It carries a 2B class of fit and an H6 thread limit, providing consistent dimensional control in precision threaded assemblies. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. This tool is sized at 2.756 inches overall length with a 0.520-inch thread length and is part of OSG's EXOPRO XPF Series 16250 product line. It is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is engineered for use across a broad range of workpiece materials, including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. It is appropriate for both blind hole and through-hole threading operations in production machining, maintenance and repair, and fabrication settings. Its cold-forming action displaces material rather than removing it, resulting in stronger threads and no chip evacuation concerns, which is especially advantageous in blind hole work where chip packing is a common failure mode.
Designed for use in any machine tool or tapping fixture capable of driving a 0.194-inch shank diameter tap. Suitable for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping arms set up for 10-24 UNC thread forming in the listed material groups.
Thread forming taps require higher torque than cutting taps and must be used with a thread forming lubricant or tapping fluid appropriate for the workpiece material. Ensure the spindle speed and feed rate are set to the tool manufacturer's recommendations for the specific material being tapped. Confirm the tap holder provides adequate torque capacity and that the shank is fully and squarely seated before operation. Do not attempt to use this tap as a cutting tap or in a hand-tapping application without a proper torque-limiting handle.
