The OSG 1625006325 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting, producing stronger threads by displacing material rather than removing it. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, this tap handles demanding materials including stainless steel, titanium, high-nickel alloys, hardened steel, and aluminum. It carries a 6-32 UNC thread form with a 2B class of fit and an H5 thread limit, making it suitable for precision threaded connections in both blind and through-hole applications. Overall length is 2.2047 inches (56 mm) with a thread length of 0.3913 inches. Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF Series 16250 line, this tap is intended for use by machining professionals and maintenance technicians requiring consistent thread quality in hard or abrasive materials.
This tap is suited for blind hole and through-hole threading operations across a broad range of workpiece materials. The modified bottoming chamfer, with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads, allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes while still providing adequate lead-in for controlled forming. Applicable material groups include aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium — corresponding to material application codes P, M, N, and H. It is appropriate for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines in production or maintenance environments.
Designed for threading 6-32 UNC blind and through-holes in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium workpieces. Compatible with standard tapping holders and tap wrenches accepting a 0.1410-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — standard cut tap drill sizes do not apply, as the drill diameter must account for material displacement rather than chip evacuation. Ensure the workpiece material is ductile enough for cold forming; brittle materials are not suitable for this tap type. Use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material to reduce forming forces and extend tool life. Secure workpiece firmly and align the tap concentrically with the pilot hole before applying torque to avoid tap breakage or off-axis threads.
