The OSG 1625003482 is a thread forming tap designed for producing internal threads in a wide range of metallic materials without cutting or removing chips. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, this tap is built for demanding threading applications where tool life and thread quality are critical. It is configured in the 3-48 UNC thread size with a 3B class of fit and a modified bottoming chamfer of 2.5 to 3 threads, allowing threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Overall length is 1.97 inches (50 mm), with a thread length of 0.39 inches and a tapping depth of 0.42 inches. This tap is part of OSG Series 16250, marketed under the EXOPRO XPF trade name. It is installed by machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance trades working on precision threaded assemblies.
This tap is suited for both blind hole and through-hole threading applications in production and maintenance environments. The thread forming method displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with better surface finish in ductile materials. Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — standard twist drill charts for cutting taps do not apply; use the correct forming tap drill size for 3-48 UNC to achieve the specified 3B fit. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and that adequate tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material is applied before tapping. Do not use this tap in brittle materials such as cast iron or hardened workpieces beyond the rated hardness range. Follow all applicable shop safety practices and machine tool operating procedures when setting up tapping operations.
