The OSG 1625002562 is a thread forming tap in the EXOPRO XPF Series 16250, designed for cold-form threading in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, producing stronger threads with superior surface finish. This tap is configured for 2-56 UNC threads at a 3B class of fit with an H2 thread limit, and features a modified bottoming chamfer of 2.5 to 3 threads for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. It is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, both of which extend tool life in demanding applications. Machinists and tooling specialists in job shops, aerospace, and precision manufacturing environments are the primary users.
This tap is suited for blind hole and through-hole threading operations across a broad spectrum of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it especially practical when thread depth is critical and full engagement near the hole bottom is required. It is applicable in production machining, maintenance and repair operations, and prototype fabrication wherever 2-56 UNC internal threads are specified.

Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than the drill size used for cutting taps — consult the applicable forming tap drill chart for 2-56 UNC before drilling. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material; lubrication is critical when forming threads in stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. Ensure the tap is driven with a synchronized tapping head or CNC rigid tapping cycle to maintain pitch accuracy and prevent tap breakage. Power down and secure the workpiece in the machine before tool changes.
