The OSG 1615016207 is a thread forming tap designed for M16x2.00 metric coarse threading in demanding metalworking applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap features a cobalt substrate with a TiCN coating and a modified bottoming chamfer of 2.5 to 3 threads, making it suited for blind hole and through-hole threading where close thread-to-bottom tolerances are required. Overall length is 110 millimeters, with a thread length of 20 millimeters and a shank diameter of 12.19 millimeters. It carries a D7 thread limit and right-hand thread direction. Machinists and tool and die professionals are the primary users.
This tap is designed for use across a wide range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. It is appropriate for both blind hole and through-hole threading operations in production and job shop environments. The TiCN coating provides increased surface hardness and lubricity, supporting higher feed rates and extended tool life in challenging materials. Coolant-through capability is supported, making it compatible with high-pressure coolant setups commonly used in CNC machining centers. Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF-OIL series (Series 16150).
Suited for M16x2.00 metric coarse thread forming in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium workpieces in blind hole and through-hole applications.
Installation is performed by machinists using CNC machining centers, drill presses, or tapping machines set to the correct spindle speed and feed rate for the workpiece material. Ensure the spindle is stopped and the machine is locked out before changing or inspecting tooling. Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication or high-pressure coolant to prevent galling, particularly in stainless steel and high-nickel alloys. Verify hole pre-drill diameter meets the specification for form tapping before use, as undersized or oversized pilot holes will affect thread quality and tap life.
