The OSG 1615012756 is a thread forming tap engineered for M12x1.75 Metric Coarse threads, built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating. Unlike cutting taps, this forming tap displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger, work-hardened threads with no chips to evacuate. It carries a modified bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads, allowing thread forming close to the bottom of blind holes. The D6 thread limit holds a 3B class of fit. Coolant-through capability supports higher feed rates in production environments. Licensed machinists and toolroom professionals are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is suited for both blind hole and through-hole threading applications across a broad range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it particularly effective in shallow blind hole conditions where a standard plug or spiral chamfer would leave insufficient full threads. It fits production machining, tool and die, and maintenance and repair operations where thread quality and hole strength are critical.

This tap is installed by machinists using a tapping head, CNC machine, or drill press equipped for rigid or floating tap holders. Power down and secure the workpiece before tool changes. Use the correct tap drill size for the M12x1.75 thread form pitch to achieve the required thread engagement without overloading the tap. Coolant-through setups require confirmed coolant pressure and flow before cycling to prevent tool breakage in harder materials.
