The OSG 1611401 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting internal 6-32 UNC threads in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a steam oxide coating, this plug-chamfer tap drives chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well-suited for through-hole tapping applications. It features 2 flutes, an H3 thread limit, and a 2B class of fit, delivering accurate thread geometry consistent with standard UNC tolerance requirements. Overall length is 2 inches, with a thread length of 0.39 inches and a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. The steam oxide finish reduces friction and provides a measure of corrosion resistance during service.
This tap is used in production and maintenance machining environments where 6-32 UNC through-holes are required in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. It is appropriate for use in manual tapping handles, drill presses, and CNC tapping operations where right-hand thread direction is specified. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in, making it a reliable choice for general-purpose through-hole work across both job shop and production settings.
Designed for cutting 6-32 UNC internal threads in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel workpieces. Not recommended for blind-hole applications where chip evacuation forward is restricted.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard tapping procedures. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to the drilled pilot hole before engagement. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Never reverse a spiral point tap under load without fully disengaging from the thread to avoid breakage.
