The OSG 1605076208 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading in a wide range of metallic materials. Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF-OIL Series 16050, it produces 7/16-20 UNF internal threads using a cold-forming process that displaces material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger thread forms with no chips to clear. The tap features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with TiCN, it handles elevated heat and abrasion in demanding applications. Overall length is 3.937 inches (100 mm). Thread limit is H8, Class of Fit 2B.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance threading operations in shops working with aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. The coolant-through design supports high-volume or deep blind hole applications where flushing the forming zone is critical to tool life. Right-hand thread direction. Typical installers include machining professionals, tool-and-die makers, and industrial maintenance mechanics working on precision threaded assemblies.
Designed for blind hole threading in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium workpieces. Material application codes P, M, K, N, and H. Compatible with standard tapping chucks and holders accepting a 0.323-inch shank diameter with a 0.242-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a different pilot hole diameter than cutting taps — always consult a thread forming tap drill chart for the correct hole size for 7/16-20 UNF before machining. Use a tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material, and confirm the machine spindle is synchronized to feed rate to avoid tap breakage. Secure the workpiece fully before operation. Inspect the tap for coating wear or deformation before each use, especially when working with hardened or high-nickel materials.
