The OSG 1605058187 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in a wide range of metals without cutting or producing chips. Carrying a 5/8-18 UNF thread form with a 3B class of fit and H7 thread limit, it delivers close-tolerance threads suitable for precision fastener applications. The modified bottoming chamfer — 2 to 2.5 thread pitches — allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Constructed from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, it is built for durability in demanding materials including stainless steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloys. Coolant-through capability supports extended tool life in production environments. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations on CNC machining centers, CNC lathes, and rigid tapping setups in job shop and production environments. Its material application range covers aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium — corresponding to ISO material codes P, M, K, N, and H. The 5/8-18 UNF thread form makes it a common choice for hydraulic fittings, aerospace fastener holes, and precision mechanical assemblies where unified fine-thread engagement is required.
Designed for use in blind hole threading applications across aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium workpieces. Part of OSG Series 16050.
This tap requires a rigid tapping setup or a synchronized tapping head — floating holders are not recommended for thread forming operations. Power down or lockout the machine spindle before loading or removing the tap from the toolholder. Confirm proper pilot hole diameter for the 5/8-18 UNF thread form using a standard forming-tap drill chart before starting; pilot hole size is critical to thread quality and tool life. Coolant-through supply should be active during the tapping cycle when available.
