The OSG 1605058180 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting, producing stronger threads by work-hardening the material rather than removing chips. Built to 5/8-18 UNF specification with a 2B class of fit and H10 thread limit, this tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating for extended tool life in demanding materials. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. It is part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF-OIL series, designed for use with oil-based coolant delivered through the tool via internal coolant passages. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a wide range of workpiece materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. The TiCN coating and cobalt substrate make it particularly effective in abrasive and high-strength materials that would rapidly wear uncoated tooling. Typical applications include production threading on CNC machining centers and manual tapping machines where consistent thread form and tight tolerances are required.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium workpieces. Part of the OSG Series 16050 EXOPRO XPF-OIL product line.
This tap should be installed and operated by qualified machinists familiar with thread forming tooling and CNC or manual tapping equipment. Ensure the spindle speed, feed rate, and coolant supply are properly configured for the workpiece material before running the tap. Internal coolant-through capability requires a compatible coolant-through spindle or toolholder to function. Inspect the tap for wear or damage before each use, as thread forming taps are subject to torsional stress and should be replaced at the first sign of distortion or size drift.
