The OSG 1605058110 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading in demanding industrial and machining applications. Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF-OIL Series 16050, this tap uses a cold-forming process rather than cutting, displacing material to produce threads with superior surface finish and increased thread strength. It carries a 5/8-11 UNC thread form with a 2B class of fit and a Modified Bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 thread pitches. The cobalt substrate provides heat and wear resistance, and the TiCN coating reduces friction and extends tool life in high-cycle production environments. Overall length is 4.33 inches (110 mm) with a thread limit of H10.
This tap is suited for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines in manufacturing and metalworking shops. The Modified Bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes, making it appropriate for tight-tolerance fixtures, structural components, and precision assemblies. The coolant-through design delivers cutting fluid directly to the forming zone, supporting high-speed tapping cycles. Compatible material applications include aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium, covering a broad range of workpiece materials encountered in production and tool-and-die environments.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium workpieces. Material application codes: P, M, K, N, H. Suitable for use in CNC tapping machines and machining centers equipped for right-hand threading at 5/8-11 UNC.
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size larger than that used for cut taps — consult OSG Series 16050 tooling documentation for the correct forming drill diameter before drilling pilot holes. Ensure the machine spindle is set to right-hand rotation and that coolant-through capability is active before engaging the tap. Do not use this tap as a cut tap; thread forming requires proper hole preparation to avoid tool breakage. Installation and setup should be performed by qualified machinists familiar with cold-forming tap requirements and appropriate tapping speeds for the workpiece material.
