The OSG 1605056187 is a thread forming tap designed for producing internal threads without cutting, using material displacement to create strong, chip-free threads. Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF-OIL Series 16050, it is configured in 5/16-18 UNC with a 2B class of fit and a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads. The tap is constructed from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with TiCN for extended wear resistance and thermal stability. Overall length is 3.54 inches (90 mm) with a thread length of 0.56 inches and a tapping depth of 1.38 inches. A coolant-through design supports high-production machining environments. Thread limit is H7 with right-hand thread direction.
This tap is suited for blind-hole threading applications across a wide range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. It is applicable to material codes P, M, K, N, and H, covering the majority of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece categories encountered in production machining, tool and die work, and precision fabrication. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes where standard or plug chamfer taps cannot reach.
Designed for blind-hole thread forming in materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. Produces 5/16-18 UNC 2B class-of-fit threads and is compatible with standard 5/16-18 tapping fixtures and CNC tapping cycles that support right-hand thread forming taps.
Thread forming taps require a slightly larger pilot hole diameter than cutting taps — consult the OSG Series 16050 recommended drill chart for the correct forming drill size before setup. Power down and lock out all machine spindles before changing or inspecting tooling per standard lockout/tagout procedures. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or use the coolant-through feature with a compatible cutting fluid rated for the workpiece material. Do not use this tap for thread cutting applications; thread forming taps are not interchangeable with thread cutting taps.
