The OSG 1605034107 is a thread forming tap in the EXOPRO XPF-OIL series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. It produces a 3/4-10 UNC thread to a 3B class of fit with an H7 thread limit. The modified bottoming chamfer, with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with TiCN, this tap delivers extended tool life in demanding materials. It is rated for use with through-coolant and is intended for machine tapping operations in production or job-shop environments.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a wide range of workpiece materials, including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. The thread forming process work-hardens the thread flanks, making it a preferred choice where thread strength and surface finish are critical. It is commonly used in CNC machining centers, drill presses with tapping attachments, and dedicated tapping machines. Installation and use of this tap should be performed by a qualified machinist or tool and die professional. Ensure the spindle is properly aligned and the machine is set to the correct spindle speed and feed rate for the workpiece material before engaging the tap. Always use an appropriate tapping fluid or through-coolant to prevent galling, especially in stainless steel and high-nickel alloys. Thread forming taps require a slightly larger pilot hole diameter than cutting taps — consult OSG or standard forming tap drill charts for the correct pre-drill size for the target material.
