The OSG 1605014216 is a thread forming tap designed for 1/4-20 UNC threading in blind hole applications. Part of the EXOPRO XPF-OIL series, this bottoming chamfer tap produces threads by displacing material rather than cutting, resulting in stronger formed threads and no chip generation. It is made from cobalt high speed steel with a V-coating finish and features coolant-through capability to support higher-speed production environments. With an overall length of 3.1496 inches and a tapping depth of 1.1811 inches, it is sized for standard 1/4-20 applications where full thread depth close to the bottom of a blind hole is required. Installation is typically performed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in production or job shop settings.
This tap is rated for right-hand 2B class of fit threads with an H6 thread limit and a 1.5 to 2 thread bottoming chamfer. The EXOPRO XPF-OIL series is engineered for use across a wide range of workpiece materials, including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. The coolant-through design makes it well suited for CNC tapping operations requiring consistent lubrication at depth in blind holes.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium workpieces. Material application codes P, M, K, N, and H are supported per the Series 16050 specification.
Thread forming taps require a dedicated forming tap drill size rather than a standard tap drill, as the hole must be sized for material displacement rather than chip removal. Ensure the machine spindle and tap holder are aligned to avoid tap breakage, particularly at blind hole depth. Coolant-through tooling should be connected to an appropriate through-spindle or through-holder coolant supply. Always confirm the workpiece material is within the rated application range before use.
