The OSG 1605014204 is a thread forming tap in the EXOPRO XPF-OIL series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, it produces 1/4-20 UNC threads to a 3B class of fit with an H4 thread limit. The modified bottoming chamfer — 2 to 2.5 threads — allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Coolant-through capability supports high-cycle production environments. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals use this tap where chip evacuation is a liability or where superior thread finish and strength are required.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a wide range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. Its material application codes (P, M, K, N, H) cover the full spectrum of common machined metals. It is particularly effective in production settings where thread quality and consistency are critical, such as aerospace, automotive, and precision manufacturing environments.

This tap is installed by a qualified machinist using a tap holder or CNC tapping head rated for the required torque and speed. Always ensure the spindle and workpiece are properly aligned before engagement to avoid tap breakage. Use the recommended tapping fluid or coolant for the workpiece material; coolant-through setups should verify line pressure compatibility with the tap holder. Confirm the pre-drilled pilot hole diameter is correct for a thread forming tap — forming taps require a larger pilot hole than cutting taps for the same thread size.
