The OSG 1602907 is a straight flute tap designed for cutting 1/2-13 UNC internal threads in a right-hand direction. Built from high-speed steel with a nitride and oxide coating, this tap delivers consistent thread form and extended tool life in production and maintenance applications. The plug chamfer style distributes cutting load across the first several threads, making it well suited for through-hole tapping. With a 2B class of fit and H5 thread limit, it produces threads that meet standard tolerance requirements for most fastener assemblies. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals use this tap on manual or CNC equipment.
The OSG 1602907 is rated for use in aluminum and cast iron, two materials that respond well to straight flute geometry. The straight flute design provides good chip clearance in short-chipping materials and offers rigidity for accurate thread production. With an overall length of 3-3/8 inches and a thread length of 1-21/32 inches, this tap fits standard tap holders and floating holders used in vertical machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads. It is sold individually and suits both job-shop and light-production environments.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use tap for standard 1/2-13 UNC through-hole applications in aluminum and cast iron workpieces. Part of the OSG Series 101C straight flute tap line.
A licensed machinist or qualified tooling technician should install this tap in the appropriate holder and verify spindle alignment before threading operations begin. Use the correct cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material - sulfurized oil for cast iron and a water-soluble coolant or dedicated aluminum tapping fluid for aluminum. Do not exceed the recommended feed rate for the thread pitch, and back the tap out periodically to clear chips if tapping blind holes. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping after high-volume runs.
