The OSG 15401 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting right-hand internal threads in a wide range of metals. It is configured for M5x0.80 Metric Coarse threads and features a 3-flute, plug chamfer geometry that drives chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited to through-hole tapping operations. Manufactured from High-Speed Steel-E (HSS-E), it carries a bright finish and is rated to an OH2 thread limit with a 2B class of fit. Overall length is 60 mm and thread length is 22 mm. This tap is turned by hand or machine by machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabrication professionals working in production or repair environments.
The OSG 15401 is appropriate for through-hole tapping in a broad range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Stated material applications include aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. It fits standard M5 toolholding setups and is suited for both manual and CNC machine tapping where forward chip evacuation is preferred. Typical use cases include general fabrication, maintenance and repair operations, and light production runs requiring consistent 2B class thread quality.
Designed as an OEM-style spiral point tap for use in standard M5 tap holders, tapping heads, and CNC rigid tapping setups that accept straight-shank taps with a 5.5 mm shank diameter.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC machine configured for rigid tapping. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct minor diameter for M5x0.80 before tapping. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Do not reverse the tap under power without confirming the machine is programmed for synchronized retraction.
