The OSG 1415001008 is a thread forming tap designed for M3x0.50 metric coarse threading in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the thread profile by displacing material rather than cutting chips, producing stronger threads with better surface finish. Built from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap is suited for production threading where tool life and dimensional consistency are critical. The bottoming chamfer (1 to 1.5 chamfered threads) allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 1.929 inches with a tapping depth of 0.630 inches.
This tap is used in precision machining and metalworking environments where blind hole threading to near-bottom depth is required. It belongs to OSG's EXOTAP VP-NRT series, engineered for thread forming in a broad range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. It is appropriate for CNC machining centers, tapping machines, and manual tapping setups where a right-hand M3x0.50 thread is needed. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and production shop technicians are the primary users of this tool.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Suitable for use in any M3x0.50 metric coarse right-hand tapping application requiring a bottoming chamfer profile.
Thread forming taps require the correct forming hole diameter, which differs from standard drill sizes used with cutting taps — consult OSG or standard forming tap hole charts before drilling. Apply a thread forming lubricant or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce torque and prevent tap breakage. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and ensure the tap is aligned axially with the hole. This tool should only be used in materials and applications consistent with the specifications listed; use in chip-cutting mode is not appropriate for thread forming taps.
