The OSG 1415000508 is a thread forming tap designed for M2x0.40 Metric Coarse blind hole threading applications. Rather than cutting material, this tap displaces and cold-forms threads, producing stronger thread forms with no chips to clear from the hole. Constructed from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) and finished with a TiCN coating, it delivers extended tool life and improved wear resistance in demanding production environments. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 thread lead allows threading closer to the bottom of blind holes. Overall length is 1.73 inches (44.50 mm) with a thread length of 0.43 inches (11.10 mm). Licensed machinists, toolroom technicians, and CNC operators typically run this tap in precision threading operations.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a wide range of workpiece materials, including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The EXOTAP VP-NRT series is engineered for high-performance thread forming where chip evacuation is a concern or where superior thread strength is required. Right-hand thread direction and a Class 2B fit make it appropriate for standard metric fastener applications in both job shop and production settings.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring M2x0.40 Metric Coarse right-hand threads to a Class 2B fit.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size — do not use a standard cut tap drill diameter, as the hole must be slightly larger to allow material displacement without excessive torque. Power down all equipment and secure the workpiece before tap installation. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material to reduce torque load and extend tap life. This tap does not produce chips, but the work area should still be cleared of debris and the machine spindle verified for correct speed and alignment before running.
