The OSG 1410108508 is a thread forming tap designed for M5x0.80 metric coarse threading in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, this tool cold-forms threads by displacing material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, it is engineered for demanding materials and extended tool life. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2.374 inches (60.30 mm) with a thread length of 0.394 inches (10.00 mm) and a tapping depth of 0.874 inches (22.20 mm). Machinists and tool-and-die technicians are the primary users.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. Rated material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, covering material application codes P and N. It is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series (Series 14101), a line built for cold-form threading in production machining environments such as CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where chip evacuation is a concern or where thread strength requirements are elevated.
Designed as a direct-fit M5x0.80 metric coarse thread forming tap within the OSG HY-PRO NRT Series 14101 product line. Suitable for use in machine tool holders and tapping attachments accepting a 0.194-inch (4.93 mm) shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size larger than that used for cutting taps — consult OSG or standard thread forming drill charts for the correct pre-drill diameter before use. Adequate lubrication or cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material must be applied to prevent galling, especially in stainless steel and alloy steel. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and verify spindle alignment to avoid tap breakage. This tool should be installed and operated by qualified machinists familiar with tapping torque limits for the selected machine and material.
