The OSG 1410104701 is a thread forming tap designed for producing internal threads in through-hole applications without cutting chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap displaces material rather than removing it, resulting in stronger thread forms and longer tool life in production environments. It is sized for M8x1.25 metric coarse threads with a plug chamfer of 4 to 4.5 threads, a class of fit of 6H, and a thread limit of D9. The overall length is 2.716 inches (69.10 mm) with a tapping depth of 1.126 inches (28.60 mm). This tool is installed by machinists and maintenance technicians working in metalworking, fabrication, and industrial repair settings.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Rated material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. It is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, which is engineered for cold-forming thread production where chip-free operation is required. Typical use cases include production tapping on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads in job shops, OEM manufacturing, and MRO repair operations.
Designed for through-hole tapping in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series (Series 14101), compatible with standard M8 tapping chucks, collets, and floating holders sized for an 8.08 mm (0.318 inch) shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication or cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material — dry tapping is not recommended. Ensure the tap holder provides sufficient torque capacity and that spindle speed is set to the recommended surface footage for the material being tapped. Power down or de-energize the machine before securing or removing the tap from the holder. Follow applicable shop safety standards and verify through-hole depth clears the full tapping depth of 1.126 inches before beginning the operation.
