Product Description

The OSG 1410104201 is a thread forming tap from the HY-PRO NRT series, designed to produce M8x1.25 metric coarse internal threads through a cold-forming process rather than cutting. By displacing material instead of removing chips, this tap creates stronger, burnished thread flanks with no swarf to clear from blind holes. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, it handles the heat and pressure inherent to form tapping. The bottoming chamfer with 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Class of fit is 4H with a D5 thread limit. Machinists and toolroom technicians in production and job-shop environments are the primary users.

This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a range of metallic workpiece materials. Its cobalt substrate and steam oxide finish make it appropriate for alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The HY-PRO NRT series targets high-volume production as well as precision toolroom work where thread quality and hole integrity are critical. The bottoming chamfer style makes it the right choice when thread engagement must start within a short distance of the hole bottom.

Key Features

  • Thread forming (chipless) design strengthens thread flanks and eliminates chip packing in blind holes
  • Cobalt high-speed steel construction supports elevated cutting temperatures in tough alloys and stainless steel
  • Steam oxide coating reduces friction and provides light lubrication retention at the tap-workpiece interface
  • Bottoming chamfer (1 to 1.5 chamfered threads) maximizes usable thread depth in blind hole applications
  • Class 4H fit with D5 thread limit for consistent metric coarse thread accuracy
  • Right-hand thread direction; compatible with standard CNC and manual tapping setups

Compatibility

Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces requiring M8x1.25 metric coarse internal threads.

Installation Notes

Thread forming taps require a correctly sized form-tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut-tap drill size for the same thread; consult an M8x1.25 form-tap drill chart before drilling. Use a tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material, and ensure the spindle is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface. On CNC equipment, synchronize spindle speed and feed rate precisely for the 1.25 mm pitch to avoid tap breakage. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and verify hole depth allows for the full tapping depth plus a relief margin at the bottom.
