The OSG 1410104100 is a thread forming tap designed for chipless internal thread production in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. Unlike cutting taps, this plug-style forming tap displaces material rather than removing it, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, the 1410104100 is engineered for M6x1.00 metric coarse threading applications. It carries a D8 thread limit and a 6H class of fit, making it suitable for precision threaded holes in production and repair environments. Licensed machinists and toolroom professionals are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading applications in materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads makes it well suited for starting threads in through-holes where the tap can be engaged progressively. It fits standard tap handles and machine tap holders compatible with the 6.48 mm shank diameter. The HY-PRO NRT series is commonly used in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping operations where coolant-through capability is not required.
Designed for use in through-hole threading applications across alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous material groups per ISO classification.
Install in a tap handle or machine tap holder sized to the 6.48 mm shank with a 4.85 mm square drive. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct form-tap pilot diameter for M6x1.00 before tapping. Thread forming taps require a forming compound or tapping fluid appropriate for the workpiece material — standard cutting oils are generally not sufficient. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements when operating in a CNC or drill-press environment.
