The OSG 1410103901 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile metals without cutting. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap delivers strong wear resistance and reduced galling in demanding tapping operations. It carries an M6x1.00 metric coarse thread profile with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, making it suitable for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. The overall length is 2.4803 inches (63.50 mm) with a thread length of 0.4724 inches (12.00 mm). Installation is performed by licensed machinists and toolroom technicians working with CNC or manual tapping equipment.
This tap is engineered for blind hole threading applications across a broad range of metalworking environments. The modified bottoming chamfer allows the tap to reach near the base of a blind hole while maintaining controlled thread form. It is suited for production and job-shop use in industries where tight thread tolerances are required. The 6H class of fit and D8 thread limit ensure consistent, gaugeable results across high-volume runs or precision one-off work. It carries the OSG HY-PRO NRT series designation, which is associated with form tapping in difficult-to-tap alloys.
Designed for thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpiece materials, as specified by the manufacturer for this series.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap pilot hole for the same thread size — consult the OSG HY-PRO NRT drill chart for the correct pre-drill diameter. Use cutting or tapping fluid appropriate for the workpiece material; forming operations in stainless steel and alloy steel generate significant torque and heat. Ensure the tapping spindle is aligned square to the workpiece to avoid thread distortion or tap breakage. Always confirm the tap holder provides sufficient axial float when using rigid tapping cycles on CNC equipment.
