The OSG 1410103405 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting, producing stronger threads by displacing material rather than removing it. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiN (titanium nitride) coating, this tap handles demanding materials including alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, carbon steel, die steel, and aluminum. The plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads allows for easy starting in through-hole applications. It carries a Class of Fit 4H with a D4 thread limit, making it suitable for precision metric threading work. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users of this tap in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is used for through-hole threading in M5x0.80 Metric Coarse applications across a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT Series (Series 14101), which is engineered for roll forming in ductile materials where thread strength and surface finish are priorities. Typical install scenarios include CNC tapping operations, manual tapping in drill press setups, and hand tapping on the bench in fabrication and repair shops.
Designed for through-hole threading of M5x0.80 Metric Coarse threads in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material Application Codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous material groups per ISO classification.
Thread forming taps require the correct tap drill size for the desired material and fit class — using the wrong drill diameter will result in improper thread engagement or tap breakage. Always apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless or alloy steels. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap is driven straight to avoid thread misalignment or tap breakage. A licensed machinist or experienced tool operator should verify spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the material before production runs.
