The OSG 1410103305 is a thread forming tap designed for M5x0.80 metric coarse threading in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and carries a TiN (titanium nitride) coating that extends tool life and reduces friction during tapping. The modified bottoming chamfer, with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2.374 inches (60.30 mm) with a thread length of 0.394 inches (10.00 mm). It is installed by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working in production or repair environments.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The HY-PRO NRT series is built for applications where thread strength and hole integrity are critical. The 6H class of fit with D7 thread limit produces consistent, dimensionally accurate threads suitable for standard metric fastener engagement. Typical use cases include component fabrication, fixture building, and in-field repair work where M5 threaded holes are required in tough base materials.

Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — the recommended hole diameter is larger than a standard cut tap pilot hole for M5x0.80 and should be confirmed using the tap manufacturer's forming drill chart before use. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated torque-limiting tap wrench or CNC tapping cycle with rigid tapping to avoid tap breakage. Apply tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material. Power down all machinery and follow applicable shop safety lockout procedures before performing manual tapping operations on installed components.
