The OSG 1410103101 is a thread forming tap designed for producing M5x0.80 metric coarse internal threads without cutting or removing material. Unlike cutting taps, it cold-forms the thread profile by displacing metal, resulting in stronger threads with no chips to clear. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap is engineered for demanding applications including blind hole threading in alloy steel, stainless steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and aluminum. It carries a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2.3622 inches (60.30 mm) with a thread length of 0.3937 inches (10.00 mm).
This tap is suited for machine tool applications in production and maintenance environments where blind hole threading is required. The HY-PRO NRT series targets ductile and formable materials where chipless thread forming is preferred over cutting. The bottoming chamfer style makes it appropriate for situations where thread engagement must start near the base of a drilled blind hole. It is typically used in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines. A class of fit of 6H and thread limit of D7 make it appropriate for standard metric tolerance requirements across general machining, toolroom, and manufacturing settings.
Designed for use in ductile materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel (material application codes P and N). Intended for blind hole threading applications requiring M5x0.80 metric coarse internal threads at a 6H class of fit.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — the required hole diameter is larger than a standard cut tap drill and must be confirmed from a thread forming drill chart before use. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or forming lubricant to reduce torque and extend tool life, particularly in stainless steel and alloy steel. Secure the tap in a rigid holder or floating tap collet to minimize axial misalignment. Ensure the workpiece is fixtured securely before beginning the tapping cycle.
