The OSG 1410102605 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiN (titanium nitride) coating, this tap handles demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It produces M4x0.70 Metric Coarse threads to a 4H class of fit with a D4 thread limit. The modified bottoming chamfer, with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading applications across a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. The thread forming method displaces material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger threads and no chip evacuation concerns. It is well suited for production environments running alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum components where thread quality and tool life are critical. The right-hand thread direction and standard shank geometry fit conventional tapping chucks and CNC toolholders.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Fits standard tapping chucks and CNC rigid-tapping setups accepting a 0.168 inch (4.27 mm) shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut-tap drill size — consult the material-specific forming tap drill chart before drilling. Rigid tapping or a synchronized tapping head is strongly recommended to maintain accurate feed rate and avoid tap breakage. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material before tapping. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle speed is set per the tap manufacturer guidelines for the material being tapped.
