The OSG 1410101608 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting, producing stronger threads by work-hardening the material rather than removing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a TiCN coating, this tap handles demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The M3x0.50 metric coarse thread profile and modified bottoming chamfer allow threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Overall length is 1.9291 inches (49.20 mm) with a thread length of 0.2441 inches (6.20 mm), making it suited for compact fastener applications in precision machining environments.
This tap is used in blind hole threading applications across general machining, toolroom, and production environments. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows the tap to start a thread and work close to the bottom of a blind bore without requiring a separate bottoming tap operation. It is commonly applied in aerospace, automotive, and industrial fabrication shops where M3 metric fastener threads are required in tough ferrous and non-ferrous base materials. The Class of Fit 4H and D3 thread limit ensure consistent, accurate thread geometry on every pass.

Thread forming taps require a correctly sized forming tap drill hole — use the recommended forming tap drill chart for M3x0.50 to ensure proper material flow and thread form. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated tap handle or CNC tapping cycle with the correct feed rate matching the 0.50 mm pitch. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless or alloy steel. Do not use this tap as a cutting tap — thread forming taps are not designed to remove material and will fail if used in cast iron or other brittle materials.
