The OSG 1410101400 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. Unlike cutting taps, it displaces material to create stronger, work-hardened threads. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, this M3x0.50 metric coarse tap features a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads, making it suited for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. The class of fit is 4H with a D3 thread limit. Overall length is 1.929 inches and tapping depth reaches 0.630 inches. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling technicians are the primary installers.
This tap is designed for blind hole threading applications across a wide range of materials, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The bottoming chamfer allows threading as close to the bottom of a blind hole as possible, which is a common requirement in tight-tolerance machined components. It is well suited for production environments where thread strength and consistency are priorities. The right-hand thread direction and standard metric coarse pitch make this a routine selection for metric fastener assemblies.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring M3x0.50 metric coarse internal threads at a 4H class of fit.
Thread forming taps require proper lubrication and a correctly sized form tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill — consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct diameter before use. Secure the workpiece and use a tapping head or CNC rigid tapping cycle to maintain axial alignment. Do not apply excessive axial force; the tap advances by thread engagement. Follow shop-standard speeds for cobalt taps in the target material to avoid galling or tap fracture.
