The OSG 1410100805 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a TiN coating, it produces M2.5x0.45 metric coarse threads in a right-hand direction with a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads. The bottoming profile allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it suitable for applications where full thread depth is critical. With an overall length of 1.813 inches and a thread length of 0.5118 inches, this tap is sized for small-diameter precision work in machining and manufacturing environments.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations in materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The thread forming method displaces material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger threads with no chips to clear from the hole. It fits standard CNC tapping centers, drill presses, and hand-tapping fixtures used in production machining, tool and die shops, and precision fabrication. The 4H class of fit and D3 thread limit make it appropriate for general-tolerance metric fastener applications.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT Series 14101.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole — the pilot hole diameter is larger than a standard cut-tap pilot hole, so confirm the correct drill size for M2.5x0.45 forming taps before drilling. Use an appropriate tapping lubricant or cutting fluid matched to the workpiece material; aluminum and stainless steel in particular benefit from dedicated fluids. Secure the tap in a rigid holder with a floating or tension-compression tap adapter to avoid breakage in small-diameter applications. Do not reverse the tap in a blind hole without confirming the machine can back out cleanly at the tapping depth limit.
