The OSG 1410100601 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-form internal threading in metalworking applications. Part of the HY-PRO NRT series, it produces M2x0.40 Metric Coarse threads using a chipless forming action, which displaces material rather than cutting it. This results in stronger threads and eliminates chip evacuation concerns in blind holes. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating to reduce friction and improve lubricity during tapping. Overall length is 1.75 inches with a thread-forming depth of 0.476 inches. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals working in precision metalworking environments are the primary users.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations across a broad range of materials. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows tapping close to the bottom of a blind hole. It carries a 4H class of fit and D3 thread limit, targeting close-tolerance internal threads in production and job-shop environments. Material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, covering both ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces common in precision machining, automotive, and aerospace component work.

Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication or cutting fluid matched to the workpiece material - consult tooling data for appropriate lubricant selection. Ensure the pilot hole is drilled to the correct form-tap minor diameter before tapping, as this differs from a cut-tap drill size. Use a calibrated torque-controlled tapping tool or tapping head where possible to avoid overloading the small-diameter shank. Secure workpieces firmly and align the tap perpendicular to the hole axis before beginning the forming cycle.
