The OSG 1410100401 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting or producing chips. It carries an M2x0.40 Metric Coarse thread profile with a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads, making it suited for threading to near the bottom of shallow or close-tolerance blind holes. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating that reduces friction and improves lubrication retention during the forming process. Overall length is 1.75 inches with a thread length of 0.4331 inches and a shank diameter of 0.1410 inches. It operates right-hand thread direction and holds a Class of Fit 4H with a D3 thread limit.
This tap is intended for use in production and maintenance applications requiring precise small-diameter metric threads in materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. The HY-PRO NRT series is designed for blind hole threading where chip evacuation is a concern, as the cold-forming method eliminates chips entirely. Typical applications include instrument components, small mechanical assemblies, and precision hardware where thread strength and consistency at minimum diameter are priorities. A licensed machinist or tool and die technician would commonly use this tap in a CNC machining center, drill press, or tapping head setup.
Designed as an OEM-style thread forming tap for M2x0.40 Metric Coarse blind hole applications in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material Application Codes P and N confirm suitability across ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
This tap should be used by a qualified machinist or tooling technician following proper setup procedures. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and that the pilot hole is drilled to the correct forming tap pilot diameter for M2x0.40 before tapping. Because thread forming displaces rather than cuts material, adequate lubrication or cutting fluid must be applied to prevent tap seizure and thread distortion. Do not use this tap in through-hole applications where the bottoming chamfer geometry would leave incomplete threads at entry.
