The OSG 1410100205 is a thread forming tap designed for M1.7x0.35 Metric Coarse threads, built for blind hole threading in demanding metalworking applications. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiN (titanium nitride) coating, this tap displaces material rather than cutting chips, producing strong, work-hardened threads with no chip evacuation concerns. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. It carries a 4H class of fit with a D3 thread limit, making it suitable for precision threaded connections in tight-tolerance components. This tap is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series and is installed by machinists, toolroom technicians, and production operators.
The 1410100205 is suited for blind hole threading in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, it covers a broad material application range. Its small M1.7 thread size makes it a common choice for precision instrument components, medical device hardware, electronics enclosures, and miniature fastener applications where clean thread form and dimensional accuracy are critical.
Designed for use in blind hole threading operations on alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. Fits standard tap holders and tapping heads accepting a 3.58 mm (0.1410 inch) shank diameter with a 2.79 mm square drive.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size rather than a standard tap drill — consult OSG or a machining reference for the correct pre-drill diameter for M1.7x0.35 forming taps. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated torque-controlled tapping machine or CNC tapping cycle to avoid tap breakage at this small diameter. Apply appropriate tapping fluid for the workpiece material before use. Inspect the tap for wear or distortion regularly, as small-diameter forming taps are sensitive to misalignment and overloading.
