The OSG 1410100005 is a thread forming tap designed for M1.6x0.35 metric coarse internal threading in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, this tool displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and features a titanium nitride (TiN) coating for improved wear resistance and tool life. The modified bottoming chamfer, with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. It carries a Class of Fit 4H with a D3 thread limit, making it suitable for precision threaded connections in machined components. This tap is intended for use by machinists and tool-and-die professionals working on small-diameter threaded features.
This tap is rated for use in a range of metallic workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. It is particularly suited to blind hole threading operations on small components where chip evacuation is a concern. The modified bottoming geometry makes it a practical choice when threads must extend deep into a shallow blind hole, a common requirement in precision instrument, fastener, and tooling applications.
Designed for M1.6x0.35 metric coarse blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, Series 14101.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — use the correct pre-drill diameter for the material and thread specification before tapping. Power down and secure the workpiece in a machine or fixture before beginning the tapping operation. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material; cobalt taps with TiN coating perform best when lubrication is used consistently. Follow the machine tool manufacturer guidelines for spindle speed, as forming taps in small diameters are sensitive to overfeeding and breakage.
