The OSG 1410100001 is a thread forming tap designed for producing M1.6x0.35 metric coarse internal threads without cutting chips. Part of the HY-PRO NRT series, this tap uses a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it well suited for blind hole threading applications where chip evacuation is a concern. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, the tap offers increased hardness and lubricity compared to standard HSS tooling. The overall length is 1.6142 inches (41.30 mm) with a thread length of 0.3110 inches (7.90 mm) and a shank diameter of 0.1410 inches (3.58 mm). Thread class of fit is 4H with a D3 thread limit, right-hand direction.
This tap is intended for use in machine shop and precision manufacturing environments where small-diameter metric threads must be formed in materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The thread forming process displaces material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger threads with improved surface finish. It is typically applied in production environments on CNC machining centers or tapping machines handling fine-pitch metric blind holes at the M1.6 scale.
Designed for blind hole threading of M1.6x0.35 metric coarse threads in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps of this size are installed by qualified machinists using CNC machining centers or dedicated tapping machines with rigid or floating tap holders appropriate for the machine spindle. Ensure proper cutting fluid or tapping compound is applied before use, as thread forming generates significant radial pressure on the workpiece material. Verify spindle speed and feed rate are set per the tap manufacturer recommendations for the specific workpiece material before engaging the tap. Never reverse a thread forming tap under power without confirming the machine is programmed for synchronized tapping to avoid tap breakage in small-diameter applications.
