The OSG 1407000 is a spiral flute tap designed to cut internal 5-40 UNC threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it features two right-hand flutes with a 50-degree helix angle that evacuates chips upward out of the hole during the threading operation. The plug chamfer configuration makes it suitable for through-hole tapping applications where the tap can advance freely past the bottom of the threaded zone. Class of fit is 2B/3B with an H2 thread limit, providing reliable dimensional control for standard fastener clearances. Installation is performed by licensed machinists or maintenance technicians working to UNC thread standards.
The OSG 1407000 is used in production and maintenance machining environments requiring small-diameter UNC threads. Its H2 thread limit and 2B/3B class of fit make it appropriate for standard tolerance fastener holes in materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel. The 50-degree helix angle promotes smooth chip flow, reducing the risk of tap breakage in blind or semi-through applications. This tap is well suited for manual tapping handles, drill press setups, and CNC tapping cycles.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use spiral flute tap compatible with standard 5-40 UNC tapping applications in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel workpieces.
This tap should be installed and operated by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with UNC thread standards. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned before beginning the threading cycle to prevent breakage. Power down or disengage any motorized drive before installing or removing the tap from a holder. Follow applicable ANSI B94.9 tap standards and shop safety procedures when selecting cutting speeds and lubricants for the workpiece material.
