The OSG 1405011008 is a thread forming tap designed for producing 3/8-16 UNC internal threads without cutting or chip generation. This tap uses plastic deformation to form threads, eliminating chip-related tap breakage and producing stronger thread forms than cut tapping. Manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, the 1405011008 offers enhanced wear resistance and lubricity. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Intended for use by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in production and job shop environments.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, die steel, stainless steel, and hardened steel. The EXOTAP VP-NRT series is engineered for high-performance cold forming in CNC machining centers and tapping machines where coolant-through capability is not required. The right-hand thread direction and H6 thread limit make it a standard fit for general precision threading work in both production runs and maintenance applications.
Designed for forming 3/8-16 UNC right-hand threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, die steel, stainless steel, and hardened steel workpieces. Material application codes P, M, and N confirm suitability across these material groups. Verify proper tap drill size and lubrication requirements for the specific workpiece material before use.
Thread forming taps require a precise tap drill diameter larger than that used for cut tapping - consult OSG or standard forming tap drill charts for the correct hole size for 3/8-16 UNC cold forming. A suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material must be applied; dry forming will shorten tool life significantly. Ensure the tapping machine or CNC spindle is synchronized to the correct feed rate (pitch) to avoid tap damage. Inspect the tap for coating wear or deformation before each production run.
