The OSG 1405010608 is a bottoming-chamfer thread forming tap in 3/8-16 UNC, manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating. Thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear — a critical advantage in blind-hole applications. The bottoming chamfer features 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads, allowing the tap to thread as close to the bottom of a blind hole as possible. With an overall length of 2.9380 inches and a thread length of 0.7520 inches, this tap is suited for production and maintenance tapping across a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces.
This tap is designed for blind hole threading in materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It carries a Class 2B thread fit with an H7 thread limit, making it appropriate for standard-tolerance fastener assemblies in manufacturing, toolroom, and MRO environments. The EXOTAP VP-NRT series is engineered for use in CNC machining centers and manual tapping operations where chip management is a concern and thread quality is critical.
Designed for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Suitable for blind hole threading applications requiring a 3/8-16 UNC Class 2B thread. Part of the OSG EXOTAP VP-NRT series (Series 14050).
Thread forming taps require the correct forming tap drill size — not a standard cut-tap drill size — to achieve the proper material displacement and Class 2B fit; consult an OSG or standard forming tap drill chart before use. Ensure the workpiece is rigidly fixtured and that the tap is aligned axially with the hole before beginning the tapping cycle. Use a cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tool life. Disconnect or lock out machine power before loading or changing taps in accordance with applicable machine safety procedures.
