The OSG 1405009808 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for cold-form tapping of internal threads without cutting chips. Built from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) with a TiCN coating, it produces 5/16-24 UNF right-hand threads using a bottoming chamfer with 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads. The bottoming profile allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. An H8 thread limit provides controlled tolerance for precision thread production. Machinists and toolroom technicians use this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where chip-free internal threading is required.
The 1405009808 is suited for blind hole threading applications across a broad range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Thread forming taps require a larger pilot hole diameter than cut taps - consult OSG or standard forming tap drill charts for the correct hole size before tapping. Use a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate to the workpiece material; forming taps generate higher torque than cut taps and lubrication is critical. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap is driven perpendicular to the work surface to avoid thread distortion. Verify tapping machine or driver torque limits before use to prevent tap breakage.
